Review of Tramontana and Peters

Translation:

Trombonist Sebi Tramontana likes to vocalise joyfully into his trombone, and his sound derives from relaxed swing jazz, which he distends and explodes with blowing effects, playful glissandi and high notes, colloquial noises as warm as Roswell Rudd or Nick Evans . Ideal for this duet with an expressive, wild and daring vocalist like Natalie Peters. She lives several lives through her superb voice, with its twisted high notes, improbable glossolalia, phonic inventions, existential slips and a whole range of sounds, textures and crazy melodies. Their on-stage partnership is above all playful and spontaneous, instantaneous and festive. These two communicate their pleasure in inventing interactions and communicating their mad joie de vivre. But it can become melodramatic or frenetic. Behind the impression they give off is their craft as singers and trombonists, their self-confidence in the heat of improvisation, a sincere feeling and an intense generosity. Following them second by second is a real discovery, with the singer having more than one trick up her sleeve and an uncommon showmanship, without making us dizzy with excess, and her colleague brimming with cheeky inventiveness. It’s solid stuff! Natalie is Swiss and Sebi (Sebastiano) is Italian. They chose to make this recording in Locarno, an Italian-speaking Swiss town, to feel at home on both sides, on the shores of a lake facing the peaks of the Alps on the thousand-year-old communication route linking Basel and Zurich to Milan via the St Gotthard pass. And so to understand each other better. As they exhale as much as possible to sing and play at the top of their voices, there’s nothing like the fresh Alpine air just a few hundred metres above sea level. It’s up to them to climb to the top.
